Gravestone Advocacy Project
The mission of the Gravestone Advocacy Project is to inform others of the conditions that exist in Arkansas’ neglected, abandoned and endangered cemeteries; and promote community involvement in restoration efforts of these cemeteries.
Goals:
- Contact Senior Centers
- Provide information about the Gravestone Advocacy Project and its mission.
- Provide questionnaires which the Seniors may list any knowledge of an
endangered, neglected, or abandoned cemetery in their area.
- Contact Historical Societies
- Provide information about the Arkansas Gravestones Project, as well as the
Gravestone Advocacy Project.
- Promote growth in awareness and involvement.
- Provide questionnaires for patrons of these Societies in which they may list any
knowledge of an endangered, neglected, or abandoned cemetery in their area.
- Contact the County Assessor’s office in each respective County, via email, and acquire
early maps which may help identify older cemeteries.
- Contact schools
- Possibly speaking to an elementary school class and showing them the
historical value of cemeteries.
- Encourage a field trip to a local cemetery where the history lesson will be an
active one.
- Promote our site by using popular sites for young persons, such as Facebook,
MySpace, or begin a blog site.
- Contact local newspapers
- Provide factual information about the Arkansas Gravestones Project.
- Speak with the Editor about a possible article about AGP, and convey the conditions of
many Arkansas cemeteries.
- Contact rural churches
- Inquire as to whether or not the church has knowledge of any endangered,
neglected, or abandoned cemeteries.
- Promote community involvement
- Host a meeting at a local Senior Center
- Find local sponsors that might donate/lend items needed for clean-up such as:
tools, buckets, water, and possibly food for the volunteers.
- Place flyers around the community to promote the cemetery’s clean-up day.
