Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) The U.S. Geological Survey developed the GNIS for the U.S. Board on Geographic Names as the official repository of domestic geographic names data; the official vehicle for geographic names use by all departments of the Federal Government; and the source for applying geographic names to Federal electronic and printed products. (I've located many a cemetery name and location with this.) In addition, I personally knew where two old Cemeteries with the same name were and they were not listed by USGS, however still a good tool! Not limited to Cemeteries by the way... locates many geographical places Submitted by Tom Helms. |

National Park Service Soldiers and Sailors system Search for Civil War Soldiers by surname, locate units and ranks... Only soldiers at the moment.... however, most handy. Note: Many of the fellows enlisted under nick names, sounds like spellings of surnames... etc... So be flexible... run different searches.... Submitted by Tom Helms. |
